Great News from GSMBA National Triples Championship Sunday 15 April 2018.
It gives me great pleasure to announce that a Gloucestershire county team won the ESMBA National Triples Championship held at Melton Mobray on Sunday 15 April 2018. Stephen Holdsworth, Tom Clough and Ryan Knight are the new national champions - a tremendous achievement, congratulations from all of us in Gloucestershire. Stewart Minchew - Chairman.
Winter League Results
Although there is one more match to play in division one of the Winter league the clear winners are Gloster Knights with Tewkesbury Avonside a close runner up. Division two has a draw on points between Bishops Cleeve Cougars and Defford so the winners on shot difference are Bishops Cleeve Cougars with Defford as runners up. Division three winners are Forest of Dean Oaks with Yorkley as runners up.
The Seniors league division one winners are Tewkesbury Mustard with Forest of Dean Bells as runners up. Division two winners are Kingsway A, runners up Defford A. Division three winners, in their first year in the league, are Whaddon Wonders (well done Whaddon), the runners up were Defford B.
World Triples Success (18 Mar)

There were nine umpires from the uk officiating over the event two of these were from our Gloucestershire association, Chris Evans and David Bubb. League rules amendment
At the GSMBA Committee meeting of 12th March it was agreed that core rule 8b of the league rules should be deleted. This removes the limit on skips visiting the head and reverts back to standard ESMBA ruling. This amendment will come in to force from the beginning of the 2018 summer season. The rules booklet on this website has been updated to show the amendment.
This years AGM will take place on Friday 18th May at 7:30 in the purple room of the Churchdown Community Centre.
County Championships and National Qualifiers 2017/18
The final leg of the county championships was completed on Saturday & Sunday 27/28th February at Churchdown CC which was the pairs and singles. The finalist for the pairs were Ryan Knight & Ollie Hipkiss (Gloster Knights) v Julian Kellett & Margaret Willis (Longhope), the eventual winners were Ryan Knight & Ollie Hipkiss (Gloster Knights) see winners. It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Ian on Sunday 21 January. Although he had not played bowls for the last few years due to other commitments he was a talented short mat bowler having represented our Gloucestershire county on many occasions, he will be sadly missed. Ian's funeral will be at Gloucester Crematorium on 9th February at 10 am and afterwards at the Playhouse Theatre Cheltenham. Family flowers only, donations to Sue Ryder or Maggies. Obituary - Beveley Collier
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Beveley on Thursday 7 December after fighting against cancer for most of this past year. Beveley was a member of Yorkley short mat bowling club and progressed quickly to represent the Gloucestershire county team during the past few years, she will be sadly missed. Christmas Bowling Quiz

The first leg of the county championships was completed on Sunday 17th December at Churchdown CC which was the mixed fours in which eight teams competed. On Sunday 29th October twenty-eight of our Gloucestershire Ladies took on the ESMBA England Ladies team in a friendly match played at Churchdown CC. Our ladies, from ten different clubs around the county put on a brilliant show and really gave the England Ladies a hard fought match, the England Ladies did eventually win the match by a narrow majority of 6 points (21 v 27). The ESMBA President Mr George Clarke said at the end of the match that this was the best work out their team had had this season. Well done our ladies you did Gloucestershire proud. Thank you must also go to all those who helped, supported and organised the day in particular Veronica and Stewart. Defford Charity Bowlathon
In August Defford SMBC held its 4th Annual Bowlathon in support of Midlands Air Ambulance, and raised £1430 gift aided which was presented to the organisation on 12th September. Thanks to players, sponsors and helpers who provided continuous games, music and refreshments. Special thanks to Woodmancote and Westbury on Severn for their participation. Also thanks to the four Air Ambulance Crew who gave us time on their day off to play. Who knows they could be potential young recruits to short mat. League Rule Changes
At the GSMBA Committee meeting 4 September the following changes to the league rules were agreed and are shown in detail in the new rules booklet available on this website. The three leagues concerned are the Winter, Summer and Seniors.
No trial ends and visitors choice of mat No 3's up Skips can only visit the head on the last end of a game All games will be 10 ends All leagues will include bonus points The Seniors League to use the same rule as the Winter League for cross-team substitutions Where possible all communications to be by email It is recommended that breaks are tea and biscuits only The annual league booklet will no longer be issued in paper form. Two Shires Friendly
The two shires friendly competition between Worcestershire v Gloucestershire on the 1st October has had to be posponed until either 3rd or 10th March could those interested in playing please leave these dates free for selection. Premier Team Captain
The Association is looking to recruit a County Premier Team Captain. Anyone within the association who is interest and suitably qualified to take on the role should in the first instance contact the County Chairman Stewart Minchew for further details and a job description. There is a new ESMBA National Competition namely the Over 55's Pairs and this will also be included in our County Competitions. All games will be played at Churchdown Community Centre and the dates and disciplines are: Mixed Fours - Sun 17 Dec 2017, Over 55's Pairs - Sat 30 Dec 2017, Fours - Sat 6 Jan 2018, Triples - Sun 7 Jan 2018, Pairs - Sat 27 Jan 2018, Singles - Sun 28 Jan 2018. A number of updates have been completed on this website to provide some additional facilities. A new top menu item "LEAGUE+" has been added that gives you direct access to all the league forms and rules and in addition direct access to the various league associated email facilities. The Summer league has been running successfully with email only results, in anticipation of the same results return system being agreed for the Winter and Seniors League, a new all-encompassing results email form has been incorporated.
Hardwicke Mens Charity Competition
Hardwicke SMBC annual Mens Charity Competition this year is being held at their new venue "Kingsway Community Centre" and will be held on Sunday November 5th 2017. This year they intend to support a chosen Cancer Charity, details to follow. The closing date is Saturday 21st October but it is recommended that you get team entries in early to ensure reserved place/s. A detailed poster can be viewed here. Defford Charity Bowlathon
Defford SMBC are holding a 24 hour Bowlathon in support of the Midlands Air Ambulance which is being held from 08:00 hours on Saturday 19th August to 08:00 hours Sunday 20th August 2017 at Defford Village Hall, Defford WR8 9BL. A poster and details can be found here. It will be played in 2 hour slots on either one or two mats according to the number of bowlers and the fee is £5 per person per slot. Music to suit all tastes will accompany bowlers throughout the 24 hours. Light refreshments will be available and all proceeds will be donated to the Midland Air Ambulance charity. Iris, after a short illness, passed away peacefully on the 17th May. Iris was a member of Wotton Hall and Gloucester Co-op bowling clubs. She was a well respected lady and will be sadly missed by so many people for her larger than life personality, humour and sense of fun. The funeral will be on Friday 2nd June 2pm at Gloucester Crematorium. GSMBA Charity Competition 2017 in aid of Macmillan Nurses
The GSMBA charity competition held at MidGlos April 2017 was again a successful event. Thanks must go to all those who helped organise the event and made the day run smoothly ensuring a good days bowling was had by all. Apologies for one name not thanked on the day and that was Mike Edginton for collecting and returning the trailer & mats. Mike Thank you.
After twenty teams had competed in a competitive, hard fought and enjoyable Round Robin of 5 games, two teams came through the groups to play the final. These two teams were Hardwicke consisting of J Jennings, P Jennings, P Farley and G Ewers and Ross consisting of E George, P Park, D Watkins and L Williams. After a hard fought final the Winners of the Competition was Ross.
Well done to all teams who took part and contributed to a marvellous sum of £784 which will now be passed onto the Macmillan Cancer Support for distribution to the Macmillan Nurses.
Seniors League Final
The Seniors League final was played today (25th April) at Kingsway CC, Forest of Dean A team v Tewkesbury Monks. It was a hard-fought very competitive match with Tewkesbury emerging the winner by 3 points to 1, 14 shots to 9. Congratulations to Tewkesbury and well done both teams. National Singles Win Congratulations to Ryan Knight for again winning the ESMBA National Singles Championship.

Obituary - Allan Spring It is sad to report the passing of Allan Spring a long standing member of Chalford short mat bowling club. Allan was truly a very underestimated bowler, he was able to demonstrate his prowess playing in the County 'A' team on many occassions. He will be sadly missed by all. Another Win for Gloucestershire
